Spark in the Dark Florida

Illuminating Science

This is Spark in the Dark Florida. We are a "Candle in the Dark" that illuminates knowledge and sets curiosity on fire. We are going to give entropy a battle.

Outreach & Programs

basslab.science Oobleck Dance Generator

Focus: Acoustics, Physics, and Fluid Dynamics

An interactive educational experience that bridges technology and physical science. Using a custom web application, basslab generates specific low-frequency sounds designed to interact visually and physically with non-Newtonian fluids (like oobleck). This provides a striking, hands-on demonstration of cymatics and sound wave energy.

About

Mission: Spark in the Dark Florida is dedicated to non-commercial research and the dissemination of scientific information for public education and general welfare. We look to engage others via "Do It Yourself" and hacker ideals.

Founder of Candle in the Dark

Hello from Steve Rush! I am the founder of Spark in the Dark Florida. My background is rooted in the nexus of technology, music, and science.

I started this organization because I believe scientific literacy is crucial for the general welfare of the public. By translating complex ideas into interactive, understandable experiences, we can spark curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

For years I have used hip-hop as a tool for science outreach. I have rapped for the National Fermi Accelerator Laborator, The Planetary Society, the National Science Foundation, the USA Science & Engineering Festival, and the St. Petersburg Science Festival. I have also performed at Nerdapalooza and the Orlando Nerd Fest.

Spark in the Dark Florida is the culmination of several of my interests including being curious and expressive.

Vision: Our vision is to plot, plan, stratigize, organize, and mobilize pro-science ideas.

    Current vectors include:
  • Publishing software
  • Creating exhbits for science museums and festivals
  • Teaming with other educational organizations
  • Organizing pop-up science experiments
  • Deploying vending machines with DIY science experiences & nerdy items
  • Research and experimentation
